Christmas 2011. 6

Posted on December 29, 2011 by admin

So!  We spent five days with family and it was kind of hectic.  It was good seeing everyone, but honestly, a weight has been lifted off my shoulders now that this trip is over.  I was very freaked out about facing the holidays this year and I’m glad it’s over.

We took precious family photos.1229 004

…in which Tim is invisible, and everyone’s a little blurry.

1229 001

We got excellent gifts.  Like amazing LL Bean slippers to keep my feet (and uterus? Yes?) warm.

1229 007

And the most genius invention known to man.

1229 008

(Interlocking corn holders!  So YOU ALWAYS HAVE A PAIR.)

And, most importantly…

image

Seriously, if you like Star Wars at all, you must purchase The Star Wars Holiday Special, and a large bottle of alcohol.  It is the most awesomely bad thing I’ve ever watched.  The plot makes almost no sense, there are random musical numbers featuring the likes of Bea Arthur and Jefferson Starship, and…just…trust me on this one, guys.

We spent the 23rd through the morning of the 26th with my family in the Chicagoland area, and then flew out to DC to see Timbo’s family.  Most importantly, our not-so-teeny-anymore, walking-all-over-the-place-but-still-totally-squeezable nephew, Henry.

image

(Henry loves blogging!  And dancing!)

Tim also got a chance to catch up on his reading.photo(1)

Anyway, it feels amazing to be home, and I can’t wait to get back to CrossFit and reasonably healthy eating.

Speaking of which, we are having friends over for New Year’s Eve dinner (one is gluten-free), and I need help with my menu.  What do you guys think of…

Apps:

Parmesan crusted goat cheese in basil oil (with GF crackers)
Raw veggies and hummus

Main:

Alton Brown’s salt-crusted beef tenderloin
Roasted red potatoes in a Vesuvio seasoning
Harvest apple and spinach salad
Something else—suggestions?  Stuffed mushrooms?

Dessert:

Peanut butter mousse tart

Considering I have entertained all of…once? I’m a little nervous.  Help!

How was your holiday?  What do you think of my proposed menu?

Taking the good with the bad 17

Posted on December 04, 2011 by admin

First…the good!  Our new home is 95% unpacked.  We have a whole lot of furniture to buy, though.  We basically have an empty living room, finished basement, formal living room, dining room, and two guest bedrooms.  Whoops.

My mom and sister were in town from Thursday through tonight and were a huge help.  My mom, in particular, made it her mission to make our house look appropriately festive and decked our halls.  She put up our Christmas tree…

124 002

…including some of my favorite ornaments.  Baby Brie!

124 003

And from our first year of marriage.

124 004

Our mantle, hung with the stockings I insisted we puffy-paint together the first Christmas we dated in law school way back when.

124 007

She even put up our teeny tiny tree and my H collection.

124 001

(PS: Have an interesting H you’re looking to place in a nice home?  Let me know.)

I loved unpacking the kitchen.  I put all my kitchen crap in there and did a massive grocery shopping trip and the cabinets aren’t even halfway full yet!

124 005

The big project of the weekend was stripping wallpaper out of our formerly awful downstairs bathroom.  You can’t see it, but it has eight-foot-high-ish ceilings, so it was quite a project.

Before?  OMG awful.

House 008

And after!  Much prettier.

124 006

We are going to add a white framed mirror above the pedestal sink, and a new light fixture (the current one is brass and ugly) and perhaps a knick-knacky shelf, and new hardware since the old stuff is also brass and ugly.

It went surprisingly well, save for this:

photo(46)

Tim ripped a hole in the wall whilst removing the toilet paper holders, which were secured to the wall with six-inch long screws with a giant non-functional butterfly clip on them.  Nothing some mesh can’t fix, though!

We also took a Christmas picture with the pets.  I will show you guys later!

Now, the bad.

I got a positive pregnancy test yesterday morning, at 12DPO.

image

Except I’m bleeding, a lot, and the test I took this morning was lighter, not darker.  I’m 99% sure it’s a chemical pregnancy—a very, very, very early miscarriage, basically.  I can’t imagine in a million years that there will be a miracle and this will wind up being viable—there’s always a chance, but I know in my heart this isn’t our baby.

It sucks and I cried about it yesterday, but the fact of the matter is I thought I was pregnant for about two hours and was already spotting when I got the positive test.  Had I not taken the tests, I never would have known.  My OB supported us trying again right away after my last loss, but it looks like my body maybe just wasn’t ready yet.

So, loss #2 on the books.  Praying for a Christmas miracle later this month.  We’ll see.

Anyway, like I said.  You have to take the bitter with the sweet.  I’m choosing to focus on the sweet.  And I absolutely adore our new home—the location, the layout, the size…it’s all perfect for us.  We’re very blessed and I’m trying to stay focused on that.  Our time for a baby will come.  (Right?)

Almost normal 5

Posted on November 09, 2011 by admin

Today was another day where I felt almost normal, aside from being insanely sore thanks to returning to the box after my too-long CrossFit hiatus.

The only thing that’s thrown me off was a comment Tim and I got yesterday.  Someone who knew about the miscarriage made a comment, and followed it with, “Wait until you have kids!”  I know it was an accident, but it was kind of a punch in the gut.  I have a feeling those are going to happen here and there from now on.

I didn’t go to CrossFit this morning—I was doing some local traveling today and it didn’t really work with my schedule.  There’s no morning class tomorrow, so I might go in the evening, and I WILL go Friday morning.

Tim’s working late tonight so I had a little breakfast for dinner.

photo(39)

We also got this totally sweet care package from my sister.

photo(40)

In case you can’t read the post-its, they say “peanut butter chocolate buckeyes,” “double chocolate peanut butter chip cookies,” and “just in case there’s not enough peanut butter chocolate treats.”  Love her.  There’s WAY too much for just the two of us, so I’ll be sharing with my co-workers.

My mom and sister are actually flying down to help us move (and my mother-in-law is driving up the same weekend).  I can’t wait to see them!  We have lots on the docket…not just moving, but some horrid wallpaper stripping and painting, and Christmas decorating, and shopping.  Three weeks to closing!

In other moving forward news, I purchased 25 cheap pregnancy tests from Amazon today.  This morning, I took one that I already had on hand, and although I’m still pulling up a positive, it’s much fainter than it was a few weeks ago, which is good and means the hormones are fading.  I’m ready to go.

I also purchased an argyle dog bowtie for Milhouse’s official Christmas photo.

Also, I currently want to spend way too much money at Lululemon.  I’m trying to be fiscally responsible since we’re, you know, buying a house, but I really could use a little retail therapy right now.  I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought myself a piece of clothing.  I’m very tempted.

What have you bought lately?

The waiting is the hardest part 36

Posted on October 27, 2011 by admin

I couldn’t sleep last night.  Every time I closed my eyes, I would start to cry all over again.  So I stayed up, Googling things I shouldn’t be Googling, until I couldn’t keep my eyes open and knew I’d fall asleep instantly.

I had bad dreams and kept waking up.  It kind of sucked.  I wish I had sleeping pills.

Today, I just feel kind of numb.  I don’t have an appetite.  I ALWAYS have an appetite.  The only thing that sounds remotely appetizing is cake.

Nothing has started yet.  I’m giving my body until Monday; if nothing happens, we move on to medical intervention.  I hope we don’t have to resort to that, but I also don’t want to drag this out for more than a week.  For now, we wait.  I am glad I have lots of sick time built up at work—I plan to use it generously.

I keep touching my belly and flinching, remembering that there’s nothing there.

I’m still having pregnancy symptoms, which is just cruel.  The heartburn, the reflux, the food aversions…still there.  I just want it all to go away.

Things that have been keeping me sane:

  • Tim.  He’s stayed home from work and is a rock.
  • Our pets.  Buckley, in particular, put aside his usual jerky demeanor and purred on my chest for a good twenty minutes this morning.

image

  • Frasier on Netflix.  It’s such a funny show, and I haven’t watched it for ages.  It makes me smile.  I desperately want to watch Gilmore Girls right now, but since we canceled cable and it’s not on Hulu Plus or Netflix streaming I’m SOL.
  • Cleaning.  My kitchen looks fabulous.  Scrubbing things feels good.
  • Starting to reread one of my favorite mindless books for the millionth time.  It’s like an old friend.
  • The “this happened to my wife/mom/friend/cousin, but then they had ten healthy babies” stories.  They give me so much hope.

We’re still thinking of putting an offer in on a house this weekend.  Our agents know what is going on, and we’re meeting with them on Saturday.  The real estate market doesn’t wait, unfortunately, and I think having a new project to focus on will be good.

I miss CrossFit, but I’ve been instructed to “take it easy” on myself until this is over.  I can’t wait to take this all out on some weights.

I am ready to move on.  I want this nightmare to be over and I want to focus on waiting one cycle and then making a baby that we will one day hold in our arms.

photo(37)

(Beautiful flowers from my best friend and the in-laws.)

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers—I hope you don’t mind if I blog this experience out a bit, though it’s not exactly the normal subject matter of Brie Fit.  It does help to work all these thoughts out in text form, you know?

Active weekend 2

Posted on September 25, 2011 by admin

It’s been a lovely weekend here, both weather and activity-wise!

Yesterday I CrossFitted.  It was a different, more bootcamp style workout than what we’ve done previously, but it’s always fun to switch things up.  We did two rounds of this, alternating 45 seconds of work, 15 second rotating to the next station:

Good times.

Saturday night we went out to dinner with Tim’s mom and uncle, and this morning we participated in a 5K charity walk for ovarian cancer, in memory of his aunt who passed away last year.  Then we all enjoyed brunch as a family.

Anyway, it was nice to get in some exercise over the weekend.  It should be a hectic week—I’m traveling for work Tuesday-Thursday, so hopefully it will fly by!

What did you do this weekend to keep you active?

I still hate oatmeal 13

Posted on June 17, 2011 by admin

I really love airports.

Tim thinks I’m nuts, but they make me so happy.

I love organization and schedules and things happening on time.  And large institutions that are so vast you can kind of lose yourself in the sheer hustle and bustle of people getting around.

Even though I travel a lot, I generally look forward to the time I spend waiting for planes and on layovers.  Traveling is happy for me.  It’s going to see and do new things, or it’s going home.  Both things I like.  I don’t mind the actual flying part, either.

Anyway, enough of that.  Today, Tim dropped me off before work so I didn’t have to fart around with parking.  Thanks, Tim.

For some reason, I got the Perfect Oatmeal at Starbucks.  I hate oatmeal.  I don’t know why I did, other than that it looked like the healthiest thing on the menu, and once in awhile, I get sucked in by the promise of delicious toppings and think it will taste like fro-yo.

0617 001

So I got it.  And I doctored it with a bit of dried fruit and brown sugar and a whole bunch of Justin’s Honey Peanut Butter I brought with me from home.

0617 002

And it still sucked.

The parts that were mostly peanut butter and dried fruit were good.  But I had to choke down the last few bites.  It just tastes kind of like wet cardboard and cat breath mixed together.

I had a short flight to Chicago, and then a lunchtime layover, where I indulged my deep love for Potbelly’s, which I cannot get in Kansas City.

0617 004

Extremely unhealthy sandwich—salami, mozzarella, pepperoni, and capicola.  But it’s totally okay, because I got whole grain bread, baked chips, and Diet Coke?  Right? (Joking.  I don’t really care.)

Anyway.  Another short flight to DC.  Had dinner with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and snuggle time with my nephew.  And now I’m in my hotel and exhausted, and have to be up early tomorrow morning for another long day!  Thank God my hotel room has a Keurig.

Do you like oatmeal?  What is wrong with me?

Aunt Brie and Uncle Tim 22

Posted on April 10, 2011 by admin

So, hi!  I’ve been gone for a few days.  Specifically, on Friday, right after work, we drove down to the in-laws’ house with my sister-in-law, Christie, and nephew, Henry.

But first?  This happened.

0410 001

I totally had a cat in my office.

Long story short: we thought we found an adopter for Bubs, but they wanted to do a trial run weekend to see how their dog reacted.  They spent three days trying, but it didn’t work out.  So, we’re back to the drawing board on trying to find him a home.

(Note: as sweet as he is, three cats and a dog is kind of pushing our sanity limits.  If months and months go by and nobody’s interested, we’ll keep him, but for now, we’re still trying.)

But anyway.

We met our nephew for the first time.  And I am in love.

207783_804113188585_2400406_40408475_2825691_n

Here is the point when my uterus exploded:

0410 002

He loves babies AND dogs.

0410 014

I’m a lucky lady.  (Sorry, Winston.)

Anyway, we spent most of the weekend reveling in the cute.

0410 005

We mastered the art of peek-a-boo.

0410 006

Henry cried, Tim yelled, “Just give him what he wants!” and offered him $20 in a panic to stop.

0410 011

Sigh.

0410 016

He’s the sweetest, happiest baby and we’re pretty thrilled to be his aunt and uncle.

Um, eating habits were not great.  But I don’t really mind.   I had more important things to think about.

(Like “omigodiwantababy wtfbbq,” specifically.)

Oh, hey, and I’m running a half marathon next Saturday.  I’d love to PR.

OH!  And today is my half-aversary.

One year ago today, I ran my first half marathon.  That race is my standing PR: 2:13:32, a number that seriously haunts me.

image

My second half marathon was a big old crapbag.  2:33:33, pretty much died at the finish line, sore for days.  Underfueled, dehydrated, hot and humid.  Not fun.

image

My third half marathon was the Disney Princess Half in February.  I had a great time and ran a strong race, though I chose a conservative pace.  I finished in 2:22:08.

image

My fourth half was the Rock the Parkway Half just a week ago.  I started strong, but the hills hurt my pace and I finished in 2:18 on the nose.

image

I also ran a full marathon, a couple of 5Ks and a 4 miler in there.  Not too bad.

So…we’ll see what Saturday brings.  I’ve done the course before and it’s fairly flat.  As usual, I’ll be chasing 2:10 and/or a new PR.

Anyway.

Do you have nieces and nephews?  What is your favorite way to entertain a baby?

Disney Princess Half Weekend: Part Two 30

Posted on March 01, 2011 by admin

Yep, that’s right. 3 am. I wasn’t kidding.  Don’t we look chipper?Disney 2011 001In a way, I was thankful for the early start. After Chicago, I bitched incessantly about how ridiculous it is to start a race later when you have weather to contend with. I would much rather get up early for good weather than sleep an extra hour or two and get stuck in the heat!

Plus, I didn’t really sleep anyway. Nerves, sharing a bed with my sister who kept throwing blankets on me, and screaming kids at the pool all contributed to this.

Anyway, we got ready and were off. I had a bagel with peanut butter since it worked so well for my last long run. We shared a taxi to the starting line and made it there with plenty of time to spare!
I then discovered the best thing to ever come out of a port-a-potty…my friend Brooke!

photo(86)Brooke (or Brookie Jay) and I went to college together–we were sorority sisters!  She’s now in dental school in DC and I haven’t seen her in years.  I ran into her literally coming out of the port-a-potty. So random!  It was her first half and she totally rocked.
My sister and I split up because we were in different corrals. Somehow, my 2:13 from last April put me in corral B, but my sister’s 2:33 had her in C. We had very different goals for the race anyway–she wanted to PR by a lot, I didn’t really know what I wanted other than a good race.

photo(85)
I also ran into two Internet friends while chilling at the start of the corral!  Hi Caryn and Mercy (and Mr. Mercy)!  It was great to meet you!
At the start, our fairy godmother saw us off and there were some fun fireworks.

photo(84)I was really worried at the start and anticipating a bad race because my stomach was feeling funny and I hadn’t been able to clear things out beforehand, if you know what I mean.

photo(73)
The first two miles were pretty crowded and dark. The sun didn’t start rising until mile 6 or so, which was kind of a blessing in disguise because I couldn’t stare at my Garmin and freak out about pace.

I was also the freak who talked to people just for fun.  I’m one of those chatty assholes on courses.  Sorry.

Miles 1-4 were pretty uneventful other than the on-course entertainment. We saw Jack Sparrow’s pirate ship and a giant Epcot ball balloon and some cute, yawning Japanese drumming kids.  I felt good, and strong, once I got going, even though I had no idea what my pace was.

photo(75)I think we entered the back roads of Magic Kingdom around mile 4. We got to run by all the beautiful rich people hotels and they were fun to ogle.
At mile 5, we entered the actual Magic Kingdom!

photo(83)I got all teary when I turned the corner onto Main Street USA.  I started this blog a year and a half ago, and wanted to list my goals for the heck of it, and threw on "run a race at Disney" because it sounded like so much fun, but I had no idea how I’d do it, since at the time I hadn’t even run one race. And here I was!
Dreams really do come true at Disney.

photo(76)

Anyway, we ran through Tomorrowland and Frontierland!  Fun!

photo(82)Anyway (sniff), the Magic Kingdom was the most baller part of the course. Great scenery, and lots of fans and characters to take pictures with!  There were lines at every character for pictures, but I managed to get some good drive-bys.

photo(77)We exited the Magic Kingdom at mile 6, and at 6.5 I decided I was at a turning point. I turned inward for a good mile or so and thought about the following things.

  • You’re halfway there. You can run another 6.5 miles no problem.
  • Hey, remember how you pooped out mentally at mile 7 of the Rock n’ Roll Chicago half, and physically at mile 20 of the Chicago Marathon?  Remember that regret afterwards for not pushing harder?  You have a choice to make, Brie.  Don’t puss out.
  • You feel really good right now. Yes, this is hard, but half marathons are kind of supposed to be hard.
  • You are a well-trained runner. Act like one.

I decided to make one goal: finish without walking. In all my previous halves and my full, I’ve walked some–through aid stations, or when I broke down, or when it got hard. I had my handheld full of Gatorade and had plenty of Gu if I needed it, so I could fly through the aid stations.  I knew that if I walked, it would all go to hell from there.

So, at mile 7, I chose to finish strong and run a race I could be proud of.

Miles 7 through 10 were probably the hardest part of the course for me. We were running into full sun and there wasn’t much crowd support, though I did see Belle, Pocahontas and several other characters.  And also the Disney fire department hotties dancing like Chippendales in pit-sweaty t-shirts.

photo(81)

Once mile 10 hit, I knew I could do it!  There were some steep onramps to climb, but I honestly enjoyed the change in grade. It kept things from getting boring, and hey, uphills mean downhills, right?

For the last 3.1 miles, I just ticked away the distance left on my Garmin and kept chugging along. I also experienced some really strong cravings…specifically, an ice cold Diet Coke, a hot dog, a cold shower, beer, and a pedicure. Every time I thought, "it’s hot," I thought about Mile 20 of the Chicago Marathon and shut my mental piehole.

I gave it a little kick when we entered Epcot and finished strong, proud, and feeling great.

Final time? 2:22:08.

Not a PR, but BY FAR the strongest race, mentally and physically, I’ve ever had.

A few random observations:

  • I didn’t have a training plan for this race, beyond a general "add a mile to your long run every week, take a stepback week if you need it, skip the junk miles" thing. I cross trained on the elliptical and by doing workout DVDs and I lifted some weights. I loved this plan, it worked, and I had zero mental burnout.  I plan to keep this up for my next half in two weeks.
  • On a whim, I skipped Gu altogether this race. I didn’t need it on my 11 miler and did fine. I drank Gatorade the entire race and felt great–no tummy issues like I sometimes have with Gu. Again, going to stick with this!
  • Ohmygosh I need new shoes. I have a new pair calling my name that need to be broken in!  I considered leaving my old shoes in the garbage in Florida, but figured I’d being them home to donate at least.
  • War wounds:  second toes on both feet are black (again) with blisters on them (again). I’m interested to see if this stops in my new, half size larger shoes.
  • Running in a tutu wasn’t bad, but it got stuck in my crotch quite a bit, and made getting in and out of my SPIbelt tricky.  Also, the tiara needed some bobby pins, because I had to adjust every mile.
  • Losing weight has helped me feel more confident about my running. It’s just 10 pounds, but I kind of feel more, "hey, if you think I’m slow, fuck you" than chip-on-shoulderish than before.

After the race, I got glittered and medaled and waited for my sister at the runner reunite area. She was in tears because of foot pain, but PRed with a 2:29:32!

Also, because I was mad about the crappy expo with no freebies (nothing in the bag but ads and a piddly mini Luna bar!  Lame!) I stole 4 Luna Protein bars from the finish line. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, $140 race entry fee!photo(80)

God bless the shuttle bus driver who dropped us off at our hotel even though we weren’t on his route. We showered, I inhaled a Diet Coke, and we spent the rest of the day at Magic Kingdom!

Disney 2011 007Disney 2011 013Disney 2011 016

I wore my medal around all day and in the Country Bear Jamboree some lady made the whole place yell “yee-haw” at me.  I got lots of congratulations, too!

For dinner, we took the monorail to Epcot and ate at Via Napoli in Italy. Not only was the food great, but the waiters were hot too!  Thanks to Meghann for the awesome recommendation.Disney 2011 018

It was a long, long, long day, but so fun and I’m so happy with how I did!

We’re back and a grocery trip 8

Posted on January 16, 2011 by admin

Hi everyone!

We had a great time at Tim’s parents’ house.  I’m proud that we stuck with Eat In Month and ate dinner before we got on the road Friday night, rather than stop on the way for fast food.

On Saturday, Tim’s mom made a turkey and I busted out my spaetzle maker and we had quite the meal.  We also made totally unhealthy but delicious butterscotch cinnamon rolls and munched on them.  I didn’t do any tracking, just used my best judgment (no seconds on anything, small portions of dessert/cinnamon rolls) but I’ll be back with Sparkpeople tomorrow.  I think it’s good to take a break from tracking once in awhile anyway!

We watched lots of football (go Bears!) and worked on some interesting family genealogy stuff, too.

Christmas 2010 9

Posted on December 28, 2010 by admin

Hi everyone!  I hope you all had lovely Christmases.  We definitely did.

We both worked all day on Wednesday, and then flew out to Chicago late that night.  We stayed at my lovely mom’s house, and then drove three hours to my aunt’s house.

She lives next door to my cousin, so we had about twenty people (and five dogs) staying in two houses!  It’s crazy, but I’d never want to do Christmas any other way.  As you can tell, there was no shortage of gifts!

164864_1396796019075_1807488291_747444_1019220_nWe spent most of Christmas Eve lounging around the house, wrapping last minute gifts, and shopping for stocking stuffers.  I gave a few piggyback rides, too.

163132_1397215989574_1807488291_748811_2191840_nOn Christmas Eve night, we open one present.  I was gifted a beautiful tiara to wear during the Disney Princess half marathon from our flower girl, Maddie!  (And my aunt is making a tutu to match, too!)
163082_1397219469661_1807488291_748825_2458413_n We stayed up quite late on Christmas Eve drinking various cocktails (both homes have full stocked bars, as you can see in the background!)  I’m not usually a big drinker, but I probably had 4 or so drinks that night and was definitely feeling it.

My uncle’s basement also hosts a collection of 800+ Christmas candles.  He’s going for the Guinness record when he gets over 1,000!  You can read about it here

Anyway, stockings were stuffed, and we woke up on Christmas morning, opened stockings, had breakfast tacos, and got started on gifts.

I got lots of great gifts that were total surprises, including this awesome framed print from my dear alma mater.  (Tim got one to match!)

167121_1397219829670_1807488291_748828_3993358_n I cleaned up quite well this year…I can’t think of everything, but I got an iPhone charger for my car, really nice new earbuds, spatulas, silicone baking mats, a microplane grater, a few cookbooks, and lots of giftcards for Ulta and Sephora.

And, most importantly, blog readers, thank Tim for replacing my camera that broke in June, thus necessitating photo-less or iPhone photo posts the last six months.  Hooray!

Another fun surprise was this giant iron H from my mom.  I really love it and kind of want to start collecting Hs around the house now!

And, of course, Tim got me another ridiculous calendar for my office.  I had one last year and it makes me smile whenever I look at it, so I don’t really care if I look like kind of a nitwit.

1228 015We drove back to my mom’s house on the 26th, and on the 27th we were lucky enough to meet my best friend’s new baby Isabel.  She’s an absolute angel…slept the whole time we were there, let us hold her without making a peep, and has perfect little peach fuzz hair.  She even farted while I was holding  her and it was still cute!

We flew out from Midway this morning, which was quite eventful.  Alarm was set for 3:30, we were at the airport by 4:45 for a 6:00 flight and were stuck in such long lines only made our flights by sprinting across the terminal in stocking feet.  (I gave myself an asthma attack.  It was intense.)

Now we’re home, mostly unpacked, and I’m playing with my new camera.

1228 013  1228 010 1228 016I love it!

Anyway, it’s back to work (and the gym—I’ve been a total slug the last week) tomorrow.  I work Wednesday and Thursday, and have Friday off.  Tim and I are planning on spending a quiet night in for New Year’s Eve—just us, a fun dinner (taking suggestions!), and The Wire on DVD.  We’re getting old!

What was your favorite holiday gift this year?
